hyperbaric oxygen therapy
at Ōākura Health
Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an all-natural, non-invasive health treatment where a client simply breathes concentrated oxygen at an increased atmospheric pressure not exceeding 2 bar, in an enclosed chamber - leading to extraordinary health benefits.
At pressures greater than normal, the body can incorporate more oxygen into blood cells, blood plasma, cerebral-spinal fluid, and other bodily fluids. The increased oxygen absorption experienced during Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy significantly enhances the body’s ability to up-regulate genes, stem cells, immune cells, energy, metabolism, detoxification and repair mechanisms.
HBOT has good clinical evidence and sound underlying mechanisms supporting transformational effects on a variety of disharmonies, injuries and symptoms.
HBOT can be used as a preventative, recuperative and restorative method to improve health and well-being. HBOT has been demonstrated in clinical studies to enhance the body’s innate ability to repair and regenerate and yields a broad variety of positive physiological, biochemical and cellular effects.
HBOT is also beneficial to our overall wellness and sense of wellness, in terms of inducing better moods, stress reduction and improved quality of sleep. HBOT is recognised as a valuable asset in speeding up rehabilitation, boosting energy levels and increasing endurance levels.
Hyperbaric Oxygen FAQs

Following current and safe Hyperbaric protocols based on sound research in a calm setting with a caring and competent provider.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) activates the body's own innate healing mechanisms and is incredibly effective for concussion, stroke and brain injury (TBI) recovery, dementia, cognitive decline, sports injuries, wound healing, surgical recovery, Long COVID, post-viral syndrome, and many other conditions. HBOT is gentle and safe & offers results that have transformed the lives of countless patients.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) protocols are designed to stimulate healing and regeneration processes in the body. Studies suggest that under the effects of HBOT, your body is prompted into producing pluripotent stem cells and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) as well as other healing substances. This is how HBOT allows the body to repair areas that are often slow and difficult to heal.
During a hyperbaric session you will be breathing in oxygen from a cannula or mask as the chamber is pressurized to 1.5 atmospheres (50 kPa), the equivalent of being 5 metres under water. Under this increased pressure, oxygen dissolves efficiently, directly into the fluids of your body, which cannot happen at sea level pressure. This allows your body to absorb up of 20x normal oxygenation levels. There is no other therapy that can oxygenate the body like HBOT.
Furthermore, the extra oxygen gives a metabolic boost of energy to carry out all the important cellular regeneration processes.

HBOT may heal brain injuries, both old and new. Regardless of how recent the concussion, stroke or traumatic brain injury or cognitive decline has been happening, HBOT will work to improve neuronal metabolic function, create new brain cells, improve circulation with the creation of new blood vessels, and reduce inflammation. The body is amazingly resilient, even old injuries can heal.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the most effective ways to speed up healing from surgeries and injuries of all kinds. HBOT provides signaling to the body to produce stem cells and to grow new blood vessels. The oxygen also provides an extra boost of metabolic energy for the body to use repairing injured tissue. Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy creates an anti-inflammatory effect on the body reducing pain and swelling and allowing increased mobility and function. The high levels of oxygen also help the body fight off potential infection from bacteria, fungus, and viruses.
Surgery is incredibly stressful on the body and brain. The anesthesia alone throws off many important systems and provides a toxic burden that needs to be managed by the liver and kidneys.
HBOT can strengthen your body in such a way that allows you to get ahead of some of the deficiencies that will need to be overcome after the surgery. This includes strengthening all the internal organs, adrenals, and brain, increasing hemoglobin, lowering inflammation, and boosting the circulation of stem cells that will be needed for healing.
Even a minimal number of HBOT sessions before surgery will be of tremendous benefit and help aid in the speed of recovery. Many surgeries are unforeseen and some are urgent. The ideal protocol would be 2-3 HBOT sessions per week for the 3-4 weeks leading up to any procedure.

Most research applications of HBOT for brain healing have shown that 40-60 sessions are needed to promote significant healing to reverse a substantial cognitive decline. This usually takes place over the course of 3-4 months and improvements continue to happen for many months after the course of treatment has ended. HBOT is also useful as a proactive approach to slow or avoid cognitive decline.

HBOT bookings are generally scheduled in 80-90 minute time slots. I tend to start people with about 60 minutes in the chamber total and work toward approximately 80 minutes in the chamber.
HOW MANY?
Modern HBOT researchers have found that a course of 40-60 sessions is what is needed to maximize the healing effects of this therapy. This is especially true with brain healing as your body requires repetitive signaling to create significant growth and rejuvenation of brain tissue and blood vessels.
Shorter courses of 10-20 sessions can be very effective for soft tissue or bone injuries or surface wound healing (such traumatic injury or surgical recovery).
THE EXPERIENCE?
Clients tend to feel very relaxed during the session, often falling into a rejuvenating nap. Afterward, there is a feeling of vitality and energy that continues throughout the day. During the initial stages of the healing protocol, there may be some fatigue that sets in later as your body goes into repair mode.

In general the fee for a HBOT session is $90 for a 60-minute session and $110 for an 80-minute session. For first timers in our chamber there is an intake, consult and orientation required before booking a follow up session. There is also a one-off fee for your cannula or mask of $10 which you will bring to and from your sessions.
For clients wanting or needing high frequency use of the chamber please speak with Jeff about multiple session, high frequency pricing, however, we may recommend for your overall value/cost to just hire a soft chamber from our friends over at Vivian Street Osteopathic Centre (as a more cost effective pathway)
